Karaoke bars in China's main cities will have to pay 12 yuan (1.50 U.S. dollars) a day in royalties to music artists for each room, according to a new regulation set by China's National Copyright Administration. A statement on the administration's website said royalties would first be collected in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou on a trial basis. The practice will gradually be widened to cover other cities, with the payment rate varying according to local economic conditions. The move is another measure China has taken to improve its copyright protection in response to increasing pressure and is deemed vital in encouraging innovation. The China Audio and Video Association has been designated as the temporary agent to collect the royalties for music being played in karaoke bars....

Karaoke bar bombs wound five in Thailand

BANGKOK: Militants detonated three small bombs at karaoke bars and at a roadside in Thailand's rebellious Muslim south, wounding five people including two policemen. The latest attack in a nearly three-year-old separatist insurgency occurred late on Saturday in the Tak Bai district in the province of Narathiwat, one of three provinces near the Malaysian border where more than 1700 people have been killed. The 5kg bombs were detonated simultaneously at two karaoke bars and at a roadside in the area. "A bomb in one karaoke bar exploded just after the two policemen walked into the bar," one police official who declined to be identified told Reuters. Three civilians were also wounded in the two bar bombings. "Witnesses saw a teenage boy walk into one bar and placed a paper bag, presumably with a bomb inside, under a couch," the police official said....

'Boy-racer 'meatheads' wrecked our karaoke'

ENTHUSIASTIC karaoke lovers have been silenced by car "cruisers" who have gradually scared away hundreds of revellers from their popular night of pub singing. Budding Britney Spears and would-be Will Youngs were driven out of the City Limits bar by the on-going menace of cruisers racing around the Colonnades complex every week showing off their souped-up motors. Originally Thursday nights were so popular that a second event was hosted on Sundays, but since the droves of cruisers cars descended it has wreaked havoc with the music evening. Organiser Joy Storey, of Thornton Heath, said: "It's completely wrecked the karaoke night. In September it was going so well and then the cruisers came and business went down. We went from an audience of 200 to 30 all because of the cruise....

In the spotlight

The first time Vinnie Twiss tried karaoke, he sang "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. The song chronicles 40 years of history in five verses with a list of words and phrases. Twiss, now a regular at Singers Karaoke Club in Syracuse, said he chose the complicated song because he was confident he knew every word. "(Beginners should) find a song they know and go for it," Twiss said. "I didn't like being in front of groups of people, but I tried it and I just kept going." Karaoke has had the same addicting effect on many other customers at Singers. Central New York's only all-karaoke, every-night bar has developed a faithful following in its debut year. Singers has a larger song selection than any other karaoke bar in the area, and its sound system is made for singers, said owner Holly Berlin....

Rockingham County sheriff's deputies had that to say after a day long search for an escaped rodeo bull near Eden on Monday.A black bull weighing up to 800 pounds — with curled ram like horns and a mean temper — escaped Sunday night from the Eden Fairgrounds."He was a maniac," said Dennis Sturgill, who manages events at the fairgrounds.Sturgill said that a bullrider, angry from being left out of the rodeo, let the bull out of its trailer at the end of the event, about 9:30 p.m. Sunday."He turned right into the woods," Sturgill said about the bull.On Monday, sheriff's deputies were warning neighbors to be on the lookout for the animal. Music Row seeks millions from karaoke companies
Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 7:09:32 AM by Blog57 Team
The publishers of more than 100 songs ranging from Kenny Wayne Shepherd's “Blue on Black" to Ashanti's “Baby" are suing the makers of karaoke-ready CDs for what could be millions of dollars worth of copyright infringement violations. The Nashville offices of Famous Music and Ensign Music – both located at 65 Music Square East – filed the federal lawsuit earlier this week in the Middle District Court of Tennessee. In the copyright infringement suit, the two companies claim that Stellar Records Inc. and its partners have violated federal copyright law by producing karaoke music recordings without the permission of the creators and producers of the original work. Stellar Records produces karaoke-ready CDs under the brand names “Pop Hits Monthly" and “Sing it Now." The suit claims that Stellar, as one of the leading competitors in a multi-million dollar industry, is illegally producing “CD+G" recordings of copyrighted songs, where the vocal tracks have been altered or omitted so they can be used for karaoke, but the songs otherwise remain intact....
