Truckers, fishermen and electricians from as far as Santa Cruz show up at Coastside Gourmet Coffee in Half Moon Bay at 6 a.m. for a cup of Raman Bechar's distinctive chai. Customers' grandchildren smile at them from photos next to the register. But these days, there is little harmony under the shop's Tibetan peace flags. Instead, they're lining up to sign a petition to stop Bechar's landlord from replacing the Coastside with the city's first Peet's Coffee & Tea. This is Half Moon Bay, where quirky and quaint trump trendy -- and there's already a Starbucks in a nearby strip mall off Highway 1. ``This is our cracker barrel. It represents everything that distinguishes a sense of community,'' said El Granada resident Bonnie Rensberg, who brought the petition to the Coastside on Sunday....

BAGHDAD, Nov 8 (AP): Police raised the death toll in a suicide bomb attack on a Shiite coffee shop in Baghdad to 21 Wednesday, with 25 others injured, while gunmen killed at least one man and wounded four in an attack on a Shiite bakery. The coffee shop explosion, which followed days of mortar attacks on Sunni neighbourhoods that killed another 21 people, had originally been reported as a mortar barrage, but police official Ali Muhssin said that was incorrect. Mortar attacks on Sunni neighbourhoods continued unabated, however, with one person killed and four wounded when two rounds slammed into Qahira in north Baghdad early Wednesday. US forces said they killed four suspected insurgents in gunbattles and detained 48 others during a raid Tuesday afternoon on a site used by the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group in Ramadi, 115 kilometres (70 miles) west of Baghdad....

A real Wonder Woman

When a comic book fan is searching for the latest issue of "Superman," "Detective Comics" or "The Uncanny X-Men," the last person they might expect to find behind a comics-shop counter is a 58-year-old woman who greets you with a big smile and a hot cup of coffee. But, if you walk into Comics Universe, located at 1869 U.S. 45 Bypass, that's just who'll you'll find inside. ....

Brazil's Cooxupe sees gradual China coffee growth

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Brazil's biggest coffee cooperative, Cooxupe, said that its pioneer coffee shop in China covered costs in the first year of operation and that it saw scope for expansion. The shop, in a shopping center in the former Chinese imperial capital of Xi'an, was opened in partnership with China's FAB Export and Import Group and Belgium's CPE Group. "We broke even which for us is an achievement," said Joaquim Libanio Ferreira Leite, Cooxupe's director of exports, adding that development of the Chinese coffee market was a long-term venture. It sells hot and iced coffee, espressos and cappuccinos, together with small bars of Belgian chocolate. "We're proceeding slowly," Leite said. "China has a history of some 7,000 years but only started drinking coffee a few years ago." He said that Cooxupe will move its coffee shop to the ground floor of the same shopping center in Xi'an to be closer to consumers and have Starbucks Corp....

Serious (yay!) about coffee

Southern California is used to the spotlight, but when it comes to independent coffeehouses, we're still in the rain shadow of the Pacific Northwest. Maybe this is because Angelenos don't have to endure the lurking damp and early darkness that send so many Seattleites running to the comfort of their neighborhood coffee bars. Or maybe it's because we've historically liked the ice-blended drinks that play so much better at the beach (it's really hard to carry a demitasse of espresso in flip-flops over the sand). Although there are hundreds of places to get a cup of coffee — or a soy decaf triple latte — in this town, it's surprisingly difficult to find a really good one. Between over-roasted beans, drinks with a proportion of milk more suited to a milkshake than a latte, anemic shots of espresso and flat-out terrible brew, it's harder than you think to get a satisfying caffeine fix....

NARROWSBURG, NY ?Roasters is now free to add tables. At the October 16 Tusten Planning Board meeting, a public hearing was held concerning the question of whether the coffee shop, which serves locally produced bakery goods and light lunch fare, can be classified as a restaurant. Resident Barbara Yeaman spoke up in favor of finding a solution to the problem facing Roasters. She pointed out that if potential investors heard about the Roasters struggle to get a permit for a few tables, they might be disinclined to locate a business in Tusten. Others present said with that allowing Roasters to have seated patrons would enliven Main Street. Later, John Fink, the engineer hired by the Santanas, the owners of the property, reported on the monitoring done on waste water from the restaurant, 15 Main, and from Roasters as well....

BALLARD, Wash., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Customers at a Ballard, Wash., coffee shop say they're sad that Laverne, a blonde mannequin on roller skates, has been stolen from the roof of the shop. DAVAO'S first specialty coffee shop, Blugr Coffee is celebrating its 100th Month for the whole month of October. A milestone like this deserves a fanfare and one day is not enough. That's why the revelry will be for a whole month. Blugre Coffee opened its door to the Dabawenyos serving hot, iced, and ice-blended espresso drinks and its famous for its Durian Gatchpuccino (a cappuccino concoction with real bits of durian and is a favorite among the locals and visitors who clamor for it), and yummy pastries and cakes in June 1998. ....
