| Meridian Apartment Fire | | Posted Tuesday, February 06, 2007 1:09:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | As millions of Americans were settling in to enjoy the Super Bowl Sunday, some Meridian residents were forced to leave their homes. Shortly after five, a fire ripped through an apartment building at Northwood Place. Paris and Allen Rattler moved into their apartment just a few weeks ago. Now, the siblings will be looking for somewhere else to live after a fire destroyed their apartment and 11 others at Northwood Place. The fire marks the end of a trying month for the Rattlers'. On January 5th in the Blackwater community of Kemper County, the trailer they were sleeping in was picked up off of its foundation and thrown into the woods. Their mother, Mary Rattler, remains in a Jackson hospital. Chief Homan says fire crews will remain at the apartment complex through the night.... | |

| | | A woman's touch | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 11:37:00 PM by Blog57 Team | | Susana Baca, the internationally renowned Afro-Peruvian singer, is at work in a Chicago rehearsal studio, chasing away the chill as she moves sinuously to strings and percussion, including the rattle made from the skull of a burro. A petite woman with a beatific smile, Baca is wearing a black tunic, footless black tights and several pieces of elegant silver jewelry. And she displays the easy grace of a natural-born dancer as she works her way through "Mi Corazon Negro" ("My Black Heart"), a new work by choreographer Eduardo Vilaro, artistic director of Luna Negra Dance Theater, the Chicago-bred contemporary dance troupe with a Latino soul. Surrounded by the dancers of Luna Negra, and accompanied by her own band, Baca is the picture of bliss. Born outside Lima, Peru -- in a place where the descendants of slaves have lived since the days of the Spanish empire -- Baca has forged her career by pursuing two principal interests.... | |

Steve Miller of Chubby's Barbeque, 3801 Rossville Blvd., said he was getting out of his vehicle when he was approached by a black male about 5'8" and 190 pounds wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. The man, who was holding a small black handgun, told him, "I want the money." Mr. Miller said he handed over his wallet containing $80, his driver's license and Social Security card. He said the man forced him inside Chubby's and directed him to give him the restaurant's cash. He said when he told the man he did not know the combination to the safe, the man hit him in the head with the gun. He said the man made his carry the 80-pound safe outside to the west side of the restaurant.... | |

| | | Trumann Lions celebrate 30 years of BBQ | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 1:36:22 PM by Blog57 Team | | This year the club decided it will select three individuals who have been instrumental in the BBQ over the past 30 years. The three chosen were Lions Charles Montgomery, who has been in the Trumann Lions for over 50 years, the late Howard Vines and the late Wells Dungan. The barbeque is set for noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 in the Cedar Park Elementary Cafeteria on Cedar Street off Hwy 469 in Trumann. The meal consists of a heaping portion of the club's famous barbeque, homemade cole slaw and beans, two buns and drinks for those who dine in, and of course there is plenty of delicious sauce to drench it in. Carry out and delivery is also available. This has become an annual community social event for Trumann and surrounding residents to sit, enjoy a fabulous meal, enjoy good company and know they are helping benefit a great organization, but started off on a more serious note.... | |

| | | Bright Eyes Announce Second Leg of U.S. Tour | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 7:17:37 AM by Blog57 Team | | "Bright" and "faint" are antonyms. Bright Eyes and the Faint, while Saddle Creek labelmates, are completely different bands. But for six crazy weeks bouncing from coast to coast and back again, Conor Oberst's latest incarnation of Bright Eyes will feature the Faint as his backing band. The Faint will also take opening duties. Earlier this year, Oberst hit the road with an acoustically minded version of the group in support of the quiet, folky I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. This new tour, which will undoubtedly rock harder and be more aggressive than its predecessor, will feature songs from the electronically minded Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. This is not your emo-girlfriend's Bright Eyes. Also, I know Oberst is from Omaha, but perhaps too much time spent living in New York has damaged his understanding of North American geography.... | |

| | | K.C. to Carolina, Lacy's ribs hang with the best | | Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 11:18:21 AM by Blog57 Team | | Yeah, there are a lot of states that have staked their claim in the barbecue bonanza. But what about our own little Small Wonder? Where does Delaware rank in the barbecue biz? We found that it's probably higher than you might think, after we wandered into Lacy's Smokin' Rib House in Bear last week for a rib lunch with all the fixin's. Lacy's joint is a humble little eatery, with a simple smattering of tables and chairs for eating in. After the smell woke up the olfactory nerves, we decided to order a smorgasbord's worth of food and headed back to the office for chow. Once at our desks, chomping on ribs, chicken, slaw and yams, our little nook was dead silent. Everyone was engrossed in their plates. The only peeps that could be heard were those of passersby, wondering where the intoxicating smell was coming from.... | |

| | | City Club tourney appealing | | Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 11:08:28 AM by Blog57 Team | | City Club assistant tennis pro Gus Rezende likes the look of this year's field in the Men's Pro Invitational, a $3,500 tournament in its third year set for Nov. 3-5 at the River Ranch facility. "This is our best field we've ever had for ranked players," Fezende said. "It's an invitational tournament, and we've invited some good players. Six of them have ATP points and world rankings." .... | |

| | | Face your fears | | Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 3:10:20 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Halloween season just wouldn't be the Halloween season without having some hollow-eyed corpse chase you with a chainsaw. That's what thousands of local and area residents think, anyway. There are plenty of blood-chilling, spine-tingling experiences around, plus some benign, "family-friendly" ones. They include: Haunted FearGrounds "It's not a kiddie haunted house," warns Jefferson High School teacher Scott Ahlersmeyer, event spokesman. " ... People, quite often, have to be taken out; they want to be removed. We've worked 13 years on this, so we know how to scare people." The event, a project of the First Edition show choir, moved to the fairgrounds last year from its old site in the former Pythian Home. For 30 tortured minutes, visitors walk through a series of haunted buildings and eerie wooden barns, erected by between 100 and 200 Jeff students, teachers, and adult volunteers.... | |

| | | Bright Eyes' Digital Tour Launches Tonight | | Posted Tuesday, October 10, 2006 7:07:31 AM by Blog57 Team | | Remember that acoustic Wide Awake tour Bright Eyes put on earlier this year? Or maybe you caught Conor and co. open up for R.E.M.? Well, that was all a warm up. The Saddle Creek one-two punch, better known as Bright Eyes and the Faint (sorry, Cursive), are ready to sock your sorry ass back to the analog age, as today sees the pair of bands begin their nearly three-month tour pumping out those hits from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. As previously reported, the Faint will open for Bright Eyes, and then transform into Oberst's backing band during the Bright Eyes set, which we'd compare to Beck and the Flaming Lips if it didn't make us feel so dirty. The tour winds its way from Midwest to West, back to Midwest, to the East, down South, and then back West, and just recently the bands added a few more dates in Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma.... | |

| | | CBGC Tight Lies tees up | | Posted Thursday, October 05, 2006 7:07:41 AM by Blog57 Team | | A week-long slate of tournament-related activities ranging from golf to barbeque to poker got under way Monday. But the main event in the Community Bank Golf Classic gets cranked up Wednesday. That's when more than 100 professionals and amateurs are expected to hit the course at Northwood Country Club for the CBGC — Meridian's stop on the Adams Golf Tight Lies Tour. A purse in the neighborhood of $100,000 will be up for grabs this week, and a host of up-and-coming golfing professionals are in the field. "At present, 22 of the top 30 on the money list will be competing," Tight Lies Tour media director Sharon Largent said. "The field is strong and you will be seeing some great golf throughout the week." A handful of local golfers will be on hand, as well. As of Monday, Briarwood Country Club pro Rob McGraw was entered in the tournament, as was Robert Ammon of Union and Scott Morgan of Meridian — who will play as an amateur.... | |
