Strip Clubs

So far, state prosecutors: 2; strippers: 5 Defense claims harassment

NEW PORT RICHEY - Since 2001 the Pasco County Sheriff's Office has swooped down on strip clubs up and down U.S. 19 in five mass raids. Dozens of scantily-clad exotic dancers were arrested on charges such as prostitution, exposure and lewdness. So what is the result of all the time, manpower and money - the last raid cost $4,000 alone - spent investigating Pasco's strip clubs? It's a mixed bag. Many exotic dancers took plea deals on lesser charges, several saw the charges dropped altogether and a handful are taking their chances in front of a jury. And most of them are winning. Take last week as an example. Four exotic dancers were set to go to trial. Only one was convicted. Another had the charges against her dropped and two more were found not guilty....

Residents: More gunfire than good will at some Richmond Ave. clubs

In an area where strip centers line Richmond, one kind of business has hardly been welcomed by nearby residents. Richmond Avenue is home to several nightclubs.  Overnight two men were shot in the parking lot of the Metropolis discotheque. "I'm sure this is not the only neighborhood that's having problems, but we're definitely having problems," a nearby resident said. The latest crime has residents raising eyebrows again. "It's just one more example of these clubs that are out of control," said Martha Tripp. Tripp is one of many residents who recently lobbied the city to shut down three other nearby nightclubs, citing the city's nuisance ordinance.  Residents complained the clubs were a magnet for crime, which they didn't want so close to their homes....

Strip club loses $2.8M verdict

Jurors returned a $2.8 million verdict Wednesday against a Mobile strip club because it served beer to a man who was already drunk, then he caused a fatal wreck. The unanimous verdict indicated that the jury of eight women and six men believed the plaintiff's case: that Sammy's on Airport Boulevard in November 2003 served two Yuengling beers to Charles Holland even though employees could see he was drunk, and that those two beers led Holland to crash into and kill 16-year-old Sean Stokley. Sean's mother, Valerie Dawn Stokley of the Wilmer area, said the Mobile County Circuit Court verdict will make bars think twice about providing alcohol to drunken patrons. "That's the point of this whole thing, to send a message to Sammy's and other establishments like Sammy's," she said....

Vegoose Festival - Day 1
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 3:38:43 AM by Blog57 Team
Las Vegas is crazy enough as it is, but throw Halloween and two non-stop days of music into the mix and it becomes certifiably insane. Last weekend was the second annual Vegoose festival, in which an eclectic group of musicians assemble on four stages to entertain the masses in the picturesque desert a mere nine miles from The Strip. As it takes place the weekend before Halloween, there are tons of attendees dressed in festive garb, from a couple Team Zissous and a fleet of Clockwork Orange droogs to an overwhelming number of Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland-themed costumes. Since the fest has a jam-band slant, I started the day off at the Snake Eyes stage with Toubab Krewe, a six-piece out of Asheville, North Carolina, who have a decidedly West African feel. What gives them cred---and what saves them from being yet another group of white guys co-opting black music---is the inclusion of Lamine Soumano, a guitar virtuoso from the country of Mali....

Study contends strip clubs aren'ta magnet for crimes

Seattle strip clubs released a study Friday purporting to show they don't cause any more crime than nearby taverns, minimarts or department stores. The study analyzed eight years of police responses at three Seattle strip clubs and concluded "there is no evidence" they were "disproportionately more often the source of police attention" than other businesses. "Crime does not tend to accompany, concentrate around, or be aggravated by these adult business," the study said. ....

Demand up for racy adult costumes

A nurse in a short white dress with spaghetti straps and thigh-high fishnets and shoes more appropriate for a strip club stage than a hospital. A doughnut shop clerk with a name tag with a lascivious take-off on Krispy Kreme. Or a human ATM machine with a money dispenser that sits below the belt. These are among adult costumes easily found, for example, in Charlotte, N.C., at Morris Costumes and The Reddoor erotic boutiques, discount stores such as Kmart, or on the Web. While Halloween has been traditionally a kids' holiday, manufacturers and retailers noticed that baby boomers and Gen X haven't let go of their need to dress up. One-third of adults plan to dress up for Halloween, reports a survey by the National Retail Federation....

Federal judge upholds city nudity ban

GRAND RAPIDS -- A federal judge ruled Monday a Grand Rapids ordinance restricting activity at sexually oriented businesses is valid, dismissing a lawsuit filed by the owners of two strip clubs. While city leaders hailed the decision as an unequivocal win, Herb Newhouse, owner of the Little Red Barn Adult Theatre, says it only sets up the city -- and the private backers behind the rules prohibiting nudity and limiting contact between exotic dancers and customers -- for a more expensive battle. "Thank God we have the Sixth Circuit," Newhouse said, referring to an appeals court that is the next stop in the legal wrangling over the validity of the regulations. "The city and judge rely on these so-called secondary effects of my business. "Where were those in the first 34 years I've been here? If it were really about that, I don't think I would have been in business that long in this city." U.S....

City's ban on booze at strip clubs will stand
Posted Monday, October 09, 2006 11:13:47 PM by Blog57 Team
SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Supreme Court Thursday upheld a Chicago law that prohibits the sale of alcohol at strip clubs in a landmark ruling that defines how communities can combat obscenity. The state's high court agreed that the city was within its rights to strip Pooh Bah Enterprises of its liquor and business licenses under a 1993 ordinance that barred the sale of liquor in businesses that allow nude or semi-nude dancing. Pooh Bah operates VIPs strip club at 1531 Kingsbury and, because of its protracted legal challenge of the city law, is the only place of its kind within Chicago that is able to serve liquor and allow semi-nude dancing. The business will be allowed to operate until a Cook County judge moves to revoke the firm's business and liquor licenses. That timeline could be affected by a possible appeal in federal court....
