Boeckman: Christian-themed beauty salon opens
Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 1:23:10 PM by Blog57 Team
Burrell offers everything in hair care except braids. She does eyebrow waxing, sew-in extensions, color, curls and relaxers in an environment where she plays Christian music and TV programs. It's an opportunity to get away from negativity and focus on uplifting, positive talk, she said. She takes appointments for women and men of all colors. Walk-ins are welcome, but those with appointments won't have to wait as long, she said. Burrell is the only beautician there for now, but she has two vacant chairs and expects to grow her business. She had a salon, Head to Toe, for about five years but closed it when she moved away from Des Moines. She returned about two years ago and worked in another salon before opening Emmanuel. Hours for appointments are 10 a.m....

After three consecutive years of double-digit growth, Whole Foods Markets now is projecting that its same-store sales growth will slow to just 6% to 8% in fiscal 2007. So the natural-foods retailer is eagerly looking forward to the opening of its first store in Britain next spring. Located in the heart of London's upscale Kensington neighborhood, the 80,000-square-foot outlet will mark the first step in a long-awaited British invasion by the Austin (Tex.)-based company. ....

Oak Bluffs health agent boots diners at Thai restaurant
Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 3:35:38 PM by Blog57 Team
Last Wednesday, Oak Bluffs health agent Shirley Fauteux walked into the popular Bangkok Cuisine Thai Restaurant on Upper Circuit Ave. at the height of the lunch hour rush and ordered the confused employees to close the doors and stop serving. Ms. Fauteux then posted a sign reading: "Closed by order of the Board of Health" on the restaurant's front door. Ms. Fauteux took the action despite the lack of any prior written warnings to the owner, who was not at the restaurant when the health inspector arrived. Ms. Fauteux said her actions were justified because there was not a certified food handler, meaning an employee who had passed a food safety course, on the premises. Ms. Fauteux also said that her visit and the closing of the restaurant should not have been a surprise. She had, in her written records, documented several prior violations of the certified food handler rule and discussed the problem with the owner....

Restaurants divided

To realize why the Colorado Restaurant Association is leading the fight against Amendment 42, do the math. The proposal increases the state's minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.85 an hour, a 33 percent increase. But it also increases the minimum for tipped employees, such as restaurant servers, from $2.13 to $3.83 - an 80 percent increase. Most servers make the bulk of their incomes from tips, with some estimates in the $10 to $15 an hour range. Servers at high-end restaurants easily can exceed $30 an hour. "Almost no one pays their server more than $2.13 an hour," said local restaurant consultant John Imbergamo. "Servers' raises come naturally as inflation impacts menu prices." It is the customers paying that raise, however. Restaurant owners say an increase that offers a mild boost to many servers' paychecks will instead hit their payroll hard....

Australian Stocks Little Changed: Woodside Falls, Qantas Gains
Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 3:10:28 PM by Blog57 Team
Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Australian stocks were little changed. Woodside Petroleum Ltd. slid after saying it may miss its production target and crude prices fell. Qantas Airways Ltd. rose on speculation fuel costs will drop along with oil prices. Coles Myer Ltd. slumped after it rejected a takeover bid. The S&P/ASX 200 Index added 1.4 point to 5314.50 at 12:37 p.m. in Sydney. The index is less than 1 percent from its May 11 high. About 10 stocks fell for each nine that rose. New Zealand's NZX 50 Index rose 0.08 point to 3664.99 as of 3:37 p.m. in Wellington. Woodside, Australia's second-biggest oil producer after BHP Billiton, lost 86 cents, or 2.1 percent, to A$39.24, after saying it may miss the full-year production target it earlier cut by 5 percent....

TAMPA - About 200 restaurant owners, managers and employees were treated to dinner this week at Lowry Park Zoo's Appreciation Night. The event is to thank restaurants for participating in the zoo's annual food-tasting event, Zoofari, set for Nov. 4 at the zoo, 1101 W. Sligh Ave. Patsy and Lew Craven have sponsored the dinner for 15 years. Guests were greeted by zoo volunteer Jill Fredericks, who held a bearded dragon. Lew Craven said they give the dinner because "we just believe in the zoo." Zoofari, in its 20th year, will feature 85 restaurants. The Front Porch Grille, 5924 N. Florida Ave., will be participating for the fourth time. Cristi Purpura, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Patrick, attended Tuesday night's dinner with her daughters Marisa, 11, and Mayla, 7....

The Cafe del Mar looks like any other expensive restaurant on Ilha de Cabo, the fashionable beach playground for foreigners and rich Angolans in Luanda. But it has a special attraction: a small but well stocked curio kiosk with neat rows of ivory carvings, a popular but now illegal souvenir for tourists in much of Africa. "Yes, we're very popular," said the shop's owner. "Here ....
