Kentucky flavors collected for book

Sharon Thompson, food writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader, has collected some of the commonwealth's favorite recipes, old and new, in a new cookbook from McClanahan Publishing House. Thompson will be signing the new "Flavors of Kentucky" cookbooks, $24.95 for each hardcover book of 160 pages, including many color photographs, from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Kentucky Haus Artisan Center, 411 East 10th St., Newport. Kentucky chefs and families were sources for both creative or traditional recipes. The newer inventions usually include a favored Kentucky ingredient, such as bourbon, grits or pecans. Thompson's own family and in-laws were obviously generous enough to open their recipe boxes. Church potlucks, horse farms and Kentucky B&Bs also contributed treasured recipes....

Giovanni's Italian Restaurant

Italians are known for their rich and unique family recipes handed down through countless generations. At Giovanni's Italian Restaurant, owner Gabriel Hernandez Madrigali says his food follows that tradition -- with a twist. "We've had these recipes in our family forever," he says, "but we're the new generation doing them." And by "we" he means his restaurant, which is also his family. Family works in the kitchen and he waits the tables and is the face of what he calls a "neighborhood restaurant." ....

A cornucopia of spices blended into each of the dishes offers tastes galore at Bangalore, the new restaurant featuring authentic Indian cuisine. The successful opening of Bangalore, which also is the name of the town in the south of India, is credited to Prakash Nath and his co-owner / chef, Ramesh Masilamani. They brought their skills in the culinary arts and restaurant management to new heights in dining out. Bangalore is located at 1342 King's Highway Cutoff, in the site formerly occupied by Europa. Bangalore offers a main dining room that seats 65, a spacious bar with seating for 14 and a private dining room that accommodates 40 guests. A special feature is the dining alcove between the main room and the kitchen where Masilamani sets up the buffet table that serves luncheon patrons seven days a week....

Places where cooks go to surf

My goal last week was to discover a few more useful cooking Web sites to supplement the two I already use -- epicurious.com and allrecipes.com. Thanks to WichiTalk's responsive readers, I made that goal. And in the process, I also found a bunch of new recipes I have to try very soon, including Baby Ruth brownies, Olive Garden salad dressing and spicy chicken curry. Per my request last week, several readers wrote in to share their favorite recipe Web sites. I've investigated them all and found each to have its own valuable attributes. I compiled the best ones into the following useful list. Now let's get cooking: • Recipezaar.com: Julia Williams was one of many readers to recommend this comprehensive site. "I've tried a lot of them, have lots bookmarked on my computer, but this is absolutely the best ever," she said....

The owners of the historic Oatman House Restaurant, 501 E. Main St., Collinsville, ask that you excuse the commotion while their 130-year-old Victorian confines undergo a face-lift. Workers are busy putting on a new roof and painting this old house. However, daily service remains from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant is also serving up its homemade chicken and dumplings and brought back its white chicken chili, which will be entered in this year's Annual Chili Cook-Out in Collinsville. Hot caramel apple dumplings are on the dessert menu. You can call the restaurant at 346-2326 or visit online at www.oatmanhousetearoom.com.... From the ashes: Owners of Big Mama's BBQ will reopen their location at Clinton Hill Golf Course, 3700 Old Collinsville Road, Swansea, sometime this week....
