Team Party Crash: 'Paper' Nightlife Awards @ Show
Posted Friday, December 01, 2006 1:14:57 PM by Blog57 Team
I wandered into some Times Square one-word-noun nightclub called "Show" for the who cares annual Paper Nightlife Awards, ready to have my burning questions about the city's best bars, DJ's, and parties for homosexuals answered -- FINALLY. Gawker's Nikola Tamindzic was on photo duty; plunge heedlessly into the sleaze with our gallery of photos, or bounce over to Nikola's plumper version. After the jump, dangerous proximity to MisShapes. Aspiring models with big tits and bad hair in blue dresses are dropping bottles of Grey Goose onto the 40 or so tables that the pretentiously decorated room accommodates. This must be the "models and bottles" I've been hearing so much about. I make a mental note to steal one of the bottles, then spend a few minutes walking around trying to come to grips with the fact that there are seriously people in the world who think "New York Nightlife" is important enough to warrant this sort of pageantry....

Nightlife in city is dull, say students
Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 11:13:18 PM by Blog57 Team
CAMBRIDGE is being let down by its nightlife and transport, according to students. In a new survey, the city scores only five out of 10 when it comes to going out and getting about. Students were also asked to rate shops, communities, and facilities in the questionnaire, conducted by the Accommodation for Students website. Brighton and Manchester came out as the best places to be a student, with a total score of 62 per cent. Cambridge scored a total of 56 per cent, while bottom of the league were Salford and Bolton with 42 per cent. Nearly 32,000 students reviewed 78 university towns and cities. The company has also released its latest rental data. While the average student weekly rent for the UK is £59, in Cambridge the average is a far higher £83....

Erase Errata keeps a busy nightlife overseas

IT HAD BEEN three years since San Francisco no-wavers Erase Errata traveled abroad and served up a hearty helping of experimental noise rock to European denizens. Yet the feisty femmes are back on foreign soil ? in Barcelona today ? jet-setting their brains out with the politically charged release "Nightlife." Heralded as the band's grittiest, if not best, album, "Nightlife" (Kill Rock Stars) is rife with frustrated observations and political laments courtesy of guitarist/vocalist Jenny Hoyston. Last Thursday, while avoiding a dreary, rainy day in Dublin, Ireland, Hoyston and company spared the politico talk and instead dished about life on the road via e-mail. The gals of Erase Errata acknowledge the comfort of a cushy, warm bed or familiar surroundings aren't what they miss most when living each day in "drive and play, drive and play" mode....

The Booth closing leaving a hole in UA Strip nightlife
Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 1:09:12 PM by Blog57 Team
It was Thursday evening. The sun was setting, and, on the collegiate calendar, the weekend was beginning. Chip Groeschell and Todd Blanton were at The Booth to shoot a few games of pool and drink beer. The bar is the friends hangout, the place - as it says in the theme song to a TV show set in a bar - where everybody knows their name. "When you come here, you're going to see somebody you know," said Blanton, a University of Alabama senior from Dallas, Texas. But The Booth is closing two days after Thanksgiving, an ultimatum that the bar's owner said is from the building's new landlord. Though the sale of the building on The Strip is not recorded with the county, John Hammock and the four other tenants said they've been told of the sale. The buyer remains a mystery....

Singapore is aiming to be the clubbing capital of Asia and this year alone, over $48 million has been pumped into the nightlife scene. The S$40 million St James Power Station will be fully opened by mid-December with 9 different outlets. These include Movida - the word means 'party' in Cuban street slang - which will play live world music, and Mono, a karaoke venue with plush interiors. Dragonfly will feature a medley of live Chinese tunes, R&B grooves and trance music while the Bellini Room is a Swing Bar. And if you are not already spoilt for choice, Lifebrandz, the company behind the Ministry of Sound, is investing over S$8 million in six entertainment outlets to be opened by December. Five will be at Clarke Quay, and Cafe Del Mar, regarded by many as one of the world's most iconic chill out bars, will be at Sentosa....

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — The comedian known as "Borat" appeared briefly in Amsterdam Thursday, praising the city's freewheeling nightlife and defending his portrayal of the central Asian country of Kazakhstan. At nightlife summit, atmosphere sometimes got tense
Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 7:10:10 PM by Blog57 Team
A day after introducing legislation aimed at cracking down on underage drinking and making clubgoing safer in New York City, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn presided over her much-anticipated Nightlife Safety Summit last Thursday at John Jay College. The summit brought together community groups, law enforcement, the nightlife industry, government agencies and elected officials to devise solutions to nightlife safety issues. First announced in August after a series of high-profile violent incidents shook the city and galvanized elected officials and others to act, the summit was the culmination of a legislative and community push to deal with a problem that many see as raging out of control. The summit was not open to the press....
